I believe this two organizations are the biggest competitors and/or supporters of our company.

1) Women In Music

MISSION: Women in Music is an organization with a mission to advance the awareness, equality, diversity, heritage, opportunities, and cultural aspects of women in the musical arts through education, support, empowerment, and recognition. Our seminars, panels, showcases, achievement awards, and youth initiatives celebrate the female contribution to the music world, and strengthens community ties.

DIFFERENTIATION:

  • WIM has chapters. While this is a great way to expand across the US, each chapter is at the whim of the woman who decides to start it. So, while they are part of a bigger organization, it may be hard to follow through on some ideas, events, panels, etc.
  • WIM is non-profit. Damned Damsels will be a for profit business, as we hope to eventually become a multi-faceted music company that highlights and encourages women.

This organization is the most similar to what Damned Damsels is trying to achieve. While we have yet to set up interviews with someone from this organization, we believe creating a relationship with this organization could be a key aspect of getting our company off the ground. We could partner with them for a pop-up event. While, normally, they would be seen as competition, it is one of our hopes that we stop seeing them (and vice versa) as competition and promote and support each other, so that the women in the industry have the most resources possible.

2) GirlsRock! Chicago

MISSION:  "Through our music education programs for girls and transgender & gender non-conforming (TGNC) youth ages 8 to 16, we are committed to educating girls and TGNC youth about the musical, technical, and creative aspects involved in musicianship because we believe that they are rarely encouraged to explore self-expressive creative outlets and are less likely to be given access to musical and technical instruction or equipment. We believe that music can be a crucial tool in allowing young women and TGNC youth to respond to preconceived notions of what they can do and what they can become."

         DIFFERENTIATION:

  • GirlsRock! has a different target demographic. We are different from this organization because they focus on youth ages (8-16), while we will be focusing on 18 and over.
  • GirlsRock! focuses on music education. Damned Damsels will be focusing on music industry education and how the business and industry operate and the problems the industry faces in terms of the gender gap.

We believe a partnership with GirlsRock! could be beneficial. For those interested in pursuing music as a career path as opposed to a hobby or personal outlet, GirlsRock! could send them over to us and we can educate them about how the industry operates.
